What to Expect on the Day: Burial and Cremation Services

At AJ Lloyd Funeral Directors, we understand that the day of the funeral can be an emotional and sometimes overwhelming experience. Whether you’re attending a burial or cremation service, it is important to know what to expect. Our compassionate team is here to guide you through every step of the process, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and with dignity. Below, we’ve outlined what you can expect for both burial and cremation services.

What to Expect on the Day of a Burial Service

A traditional burial service involves a ceremony that typically takes place at a church, chapel, or other venue before proceeding to the burial site. Here’s what you can expect on the day:

Step 1: Arrival at the Venue

  • You and your guests will arrive at the venue, which could be a church, crematorium, or other location where the funeral service is taking place.

  • Hearse Options

You can choose for the hearse to leave directly from the family home, offering a personal and comforting departure. Alternatively, we can arrange for the hearse to pass by places of significance such as the deceased’s home, workplace, or any other meaningful location, allowing you and your family to reflect on their life and memories as the procession moves forward.

Step 2: The Service

  • The funeral service itself will typically include a eulogy, prayers, hymns, and any personal tributes such as readings or music selected by you or your family.

  • The service will be led by a celebrant, religious leader, or a family member, depending on the type of funeral you have chosen.

  • At this time, family and friends can come together to share memories and reflect on the life of your loved one.

Step 3: The Procession to the Burial Site

  • After the service, the family will follow the hearse to the burial site, usually in a designated cemetery.

  • Upon arrival, the pallbearers (family members or our staff, depending on your wishes) will carry the casket to the grave.

Step 4: The Committal

  • The committal is the moment when the body is lowered into the grave. This can be a solemn and emotional time for many, and there will often be a brief ceremony, with prayers or words of tribute, as the casket is lowered.

  • Family members may choose to place flowers or personal items in the grave as a final act of love and remembrance.

Step 5: After the Burial

  • Following the burial, the family and friends may wish to gather for a wake or reception to share memories, offer condolences, and reflect on the life of the deceased.

  • If desired, we can assist in arranging the post-burial gathering, including venue hire, catering, and any other needs.

What to Expect on the Day of a Cremation Service

A cremation service can be a simpler, yet equally meaningful, way to say goodbye to a loved one. This service is typically held at a crematorium and can be personalised to reflect your loved one’s personality and wishes. Here’s what you can expect on the day of a cremation:

Step 1: Arrival at the Crematorium

  • You and your guests will arrive at the crematorium, where you will be greeted by our compassionate staff.

  • Hearse Options

As with a burial service, you can choose for the hearse to leave from the family home or pass by significant places that hold meaning, such as the deceased's home, or favourite spots, to allow time for reflection before the cremation service.

Step 2: The Service

  • The funeral service at the crematorium will typically include a eulogy, music, readings, and other personal tributes. Family members or a celebrant will lead the service.

  • If you have opted for specific music, a poem, or a personalised tribute, these will be incorporated into the ceremony to reflect your loved one’s life.

  • For some families, the service may be religious, while others may prefer a more secular service.

Step 3: The Committal

  • Following the service, the committal will take place. This is the moment when the deceased is officially handed over to the crematorium. The cremation process will begin after all guests have left the chapel.

  • During the service, you may wish to say final words or place flowers on the coffin, which will be cremated along with your loved one.

Step 4: After the Cremation

  • The cremation itself typically takes between one to two hours. The ashes will then be collected and returned to the family in a simple urn, or in a personalised urn if preferred.

  • Families can choose to keep the ashes, scatter them in a meaningful location, or arrange a memorial in the crematorium’s garden of remembrance.

Step 5: Memorial or Celebration of Life

  • Many families choose to hold a separate memorial or celebration of life following the cremation, where they can come together to honour and celebrate the life of their loved one.

  • We are here to assist with any arrangements for this gathering, from selecting a venue to arranging catering and creating personalised tributes.
